Zheng Ju received his bachelor’s degree in computer science from University College Dublin (UCD), Ireland. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. degree in computer science at the Insight SFI Research Centre for Data Analytics, UCD. He possesses solid experience in the fields of machine learning, deep learning, dataset distillation, and recommender systems. He has been awarded grants from the Science Foundation of Ireland.

What do you enjoy most about your research at Insight?

The most enjoyable aspect of conducting research at Insight is the opportunity to communicate and collaborate with colleagues from diverse research directions. Additionally, working at the forefront of data analytics and AI, and being able to contribute to cutting-edge research that has the potential to solve complex real-world problems, is incredibly fulfilling.

What is the most challenging aspect of doing a PhD?
One of the hardest parts of doing a PhD, especially in the field like data analytics, is learning a lot about many topics while also focusing deeply on one specific area. It’s tough to keep up with fast-changing tech and methods, and it takes a lot of hard work and good planning to do well in both areas.

What are your pastimes outside of PhD work?
When not focused on PhD work, I enjoy activities that provide a contrast to the academic environment. Insight arranges many outdoor activities like hiking and special events such as
cultural mornings, which offer a physical counterbalance to the intellectual nature of research. Socialising with friends and colleagues at these events helps a lot in unwinding and maintaining a well-rounded lifestyle.
