 Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for 2 full-time fixed-term positions as Postdoctoral Researchers – Interoperability and Knowledge Graphs – at the Insight and VistaMilk SFI Research Centres, Data  Science Institute, College of Science and Engineering at the University of Galway.

This position is funded by Science Foundation Ireland and is available from 15th September 2024 to contract end date of 31st December 2025.

Insight is the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Research Centre for Data Analytics. It is one of the largest data analytics centres in Europe. It seeks to derive value from Big Data and provides innovative technology solutions for industry and society by enabling better decision-making. It supports 450 researchers across the country in areas such as the Fundamentals of Data Science, Sensing and Actuation, Scaling Algorithms, Model Building, Multi Modal Analysis, Data Engineering and Governance, Decision Making and Trustworthy AI.

VistaMilk is a world-leading SFI Research Centre for innovative precision pasture-based dairying. Leading the agri-food technology sector through innovation and enhanced sustainability across the dairy supply chain. Funded by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) and the Department of Agriculture Food and the Marine (DAFM), it is a unique collaboration between agri-food and information communications technology (ICT) research institutes (including Insight) and leading Irish/multinational food and ICT companies.

The successful candidates will work in the area of knowledge graphs, interoperability, the Semantic Web, ontologies, data acquisition, data federation, data processing, machine learning, data analytics, and decision making, with applied use cases in industry. The candidates will have an opportunity to work closely with our third-level and industry partners to pursue goal-oriented research.

Salary: Postdoctoral Researcher salary scale €44,346 – €56,764 per annum, (subject to the project’s funding limitations), and pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts.

The default position for all new public sector appointments is the 1st point of the salary scale. This may be reviewed, and consideration afforded to appointment at a higher point on the payscale (subject to the project’s funding limitations), where evidence of prior years’ equivalent experience is accepted in determining placement on the scale above point 1, subject to the maximum of the scale.

 Job Description:

The successful candidates will work as a Postdoctoral Researcher – Interoperability and Knowledge Graphs – in the Insight and VistaMilk SFI Research Centres. The successful candidates will be working with a team of around 10 researchers working closely with our third-level and industry partners on a range of topics including data semantics, data interoperability, graph-structured data models and topologies, data processing and acquisition, machine/deep learning, real-time data analytics, and decision support systems – ultimately aiming to design and develop cutting-edge technologies, algorithms, and system solutions for industry and society.

Duties:

  • Conduct research in the area of interoperability, knowledge graphs, Semantic Web, ontologies, data science/engineering, and AI for developing, testing and benchmarking various proposed
  • Support the Principal Investigator in the design and development of the specific research programme to attract research funding.
  • Liaise with third-level and industry partners to accomplish project deliverables and milestones.
  • Build proof-of-concept demonstrators showcasing research outcomes and deploy these solutions in real industrial settings.
  • Disseminate research results and activities through papers, tutorials where
  • Engage in the wider research/scholarly activities of the Data Science Institute at the University of
  • Co-supervise and support PhD
  • Engage in or assist with teaching activities when
  • Any other duties assigned commensurate to this level of

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Essential Requirements:

  • PhD in Computer Science, Engineering or related discipline
  • Demonstrated publication record
  • Knowledge of the Semantic Web (RDF/OWL), ontologies, interoperability and knowledge graphs
  • Understanding of machine learning and/or deep learning techniques along with state-of-the-art tools
  • Strong programming skills in Java and/or at least one other programming language (C, C++, Python, Scala)
  • General expertise in data science and data engineering
  • Ability to work in a team-based environment developing state-of-the-art software solutions on time and to specification
  • Motivated and proactive attitude, willing to take ownership and initiative in all work assignments
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written (English)

Desirable Requirements:

  • Experience of working in national and/or EU research projects
  • Proposal writing experience
  • Research project management experience
  • Experience of designing data visualisation tools, g. mashups
  • Experience engaging in research collaborations with industry
  • Knowledge of open source and distributed solutions and cloud architectures for data management
  • Experience of designing data visualisation tools, g., mashups
