PhD Scholarships in Neuro-Symbolic Artificial Intelligence

 About Insight Centre for Data Analytics 

The Insight Centre for Data Analytics is an SFI-funded Research Centre with more than 400 researchers. Insight researches next-generation data analytics technologies in several key application domains, such as Health and Human Performance, Smart Communities, Internet of Things, Enterprise and Services, Sustainability, and Operations. Insight at the University of Galway offers a stimulating, dynamic and multicultural research team with members from all over the world, excellent ties to research groups worldwide and close collaboration with industrial partners. 

 The Position 

The Data Spaces group researches techniques for intelligent information systems, including large-scale decentralized architectures, data semantics (representation, storage, and interoperability), and dynamic data (event and streams). We are currently looking for two PhD students to investigate neuro-symbolic techniques these areas. The PhD studentships will explore fundamental research on the design of neuro-symbolic artificial intelligence with applications within large-scale data-rich deployments such as data spaces.  

 Applicants should have the following:  

  • Have at least a 2.1 (Hons) degree and/or a Masters in Computer Science or a related discipline. 
  • Knowledge of several of the following areas is desirable: knowledge graphs, linked data/RDF, machine/deep learning and AI, distributed database systems, event and stream data management. 
  • Strong programming skills (i.e. C / C ++, Java, Python) 
  • Possess strong oral, written, and analytical skills. 
  • Effective, highly motivated team player with the ability to work independently. 
  • Non-native English speakers require a IELTS(6.5)/TOEFL (88). 

 The Fellowship 

Each student will receive a scholarship, including a tax-free stipend of €22,000, full coverage of tuition fees, funds for conference travel, and an equipment allowance. The positions are open for both EU and non-EU candidates.
