Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time, fixed term position as a Postdoctoral Researcher with Data Science Institute at the University of Galway, Ireland.

This position is funded by Science Foundation of Ireland and is available from 1st October 2024 to contract end date of 30th September 2025.

DSI incorporates the University of Galway node of the nationwide Insight SFI Research Centre for Data Analytics. DSI hosts more than 100 staff and has established itself as a top player worldwide in the areas of Semantic Web and Linked Data. It has successfully implemented a research strategy around the goal of “Enabling Networked Knowledge”, which aims at capitalizing on knowledge as the fuel for the digital service economy, by linking information and exploiting the resulting knowledge graphs as the basis for economic productivity. The institute performs fundamental and applied research in a range of research areas to enable this, including data streams and sensor networks, knowledge discovery, natural language processing, social semantics and social network analysis, among others. Research outcomes are applied in use cases across a range of domains, including eGovernment, financial services, manufacturing, eHealth and Life Sciences.

Salary: Postdoctoral salary scale €44,346 – €56,764 per annum per annum, (subject to the project’s funding limitations), and pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts.

The default position for all new public sector appointments is the 1st point of the salary scale. This may be reviewed, and consideration afforded to appointment at a higher point on the payscale (subject to the project’s funding limitations), where evidence of prior years’ equivalent experience is accepted in determining placement on the scale above point 1, subject to the maximum of the scale.  (Research Salary Scales – University of Galway)

 JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Description:

This postdoctoral position is in the area of Insight Research Challenge 4 on “Defining Authentic Inclusive Communication” that aims to identify and define “authentic inclusive communication” behaviours by examining various existing definitions of “inclusive communication”, “inclusive leadership”, and “open communication”. This project aims to develop NLP tools to detect non- inclusive language by identifying and exposing gender, racial, disability, socially disadvantaged, LGBTIQ, and other protected categories prejudice.

The successful candidate will support the activities of the project through provision of research and administrative assistance and will work under the direction of the Project Leader Dr Bharathi Raja Chakravarthi and Dr Meghann L. Drury-Grogan. The postdoctoral position will focus on research work, however, the candidate will also be expected to contribute to the activities of the institute, in particular, through writing grant applications, assist in supervising PhD and MSc students and in public engagement activities as appropriate.

The successful candidate will be based at the Data Science Institute and will be part of the Insight SFI Research Centre for Data Analytics at the University of Galway. The candidate will be supported in their professional development, be able to avail of a range of career level focussed training opportunities, and have the potential to publish research findings in leading journals and international events.

Duties: The successful candidates will be expected to:

  • Research, design, and develop foundation models in the field of NLP based on the latest
  • Conduct a specified programme of research and scholarship under the supervision and direction of the Principal
  • Establish principles and tools to support best practices for data and NLP models in collaboration with the European data and AI
  • Plan, coordinate, and implement the described research project (this may include managing a small research team/coordinating other researcher activities).
  • Assist in the attraction of funding
  • Keep up to date with research related methods and techniques, in particular, developments in the specific research
  • Collaborate with colleagues on areas of shared research
  • Present on research progress and outcomes g. to bodies supervising research; conferences, steering groups; other team members, as agreed with the PI/project leader.
  • Produce top-quality journal and conference publications in collaboration with students and
  • Mentor and assist, as appropriate and as directed, the research graduate students in the
  • Engage in Education and Public Engagement (EPE) activities of the
  • Any other duties assigned commensurate to this level of post

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Essential Requirements:

  • PhD in Natural Language Processing (NLP) or Linguistics
  • Published at top conferences in the NLP field or in high impact factor
  • Excellent understanding of experimental design and scientific methodologies
  • Strong command of oral and written English
  • Good programming skills

Desirable Requirements:

  • Strong knowledge of NLP equality, diversity, and inclusion
  • Experience engaging in research collaborations with industry
  • Experience in writing grant proposals
  • Experience of working in national and/or EU research projects
