PhD Scholarship in Cultural Analytics: Irish Cultural History and the Rosamond Jacob Diaries

A doctoral scholarship is available in Cultural Analytics to work within an interdisciplinary team in
the Insight Centre for Data Analytics in collaboration with UCD School of English and Drama.
Description
The doctoral scholar will work on the Diaries of Rosamond Jacob Project. Jacob was a novelist,
historian, and activist. Her diaries cover the period 1897-1960. They are a major resource for the
study of Irish cultural and social history, women's history, and life writing in the Manuscript
Collection of the National Library of Ireland (MS 32582: 1-170,
http://catalogue.nli.ie/Collection/vtls000029815?recordID=vtls000790274). The PhD student will
develop their own independent doctoral thesis using the diaries as primary research material, but
will work within a project team using text mining and image processing techniques to fully realise
the research potential of this unique resource. They will also assist in the development of public
engagement activities communicating research findings as part of a number of Decade of
Centenaries activities.

Doctoral students will join a vibrant interdisciplinary research community, with regular seminars,
workshops, and symposia. All necessary training in digital methodologies and data analytics
techniques will be provided. The scholarship will cover EU fees, necessary travel, and a
maintenance grant of €18,000 p.a. for 3 years, with possibility of extension for a maximum of 1
year.

Scholarship 2
MA in English Literature, Gender Studies, Irish Studies or equivalent (high MA result of 2:1- 1:1 or
GPA above 3.2)
Evidence of a strong interest in the role of gender in culture and cultural history
Commitment to developing a high degree of proficiency in cultural analytics methodologies
Excellent oral and written communication skills
IELTS score of 8, if English is not your first language
Desirable Criteria for 1 and 2
BA in History
MA dissertation in related research area
Experience of collaborating with researchers from other disciplines or interdisciplinary training
Completion of digital humanities or related training
