FAQ
Insight is an Irish national research centre. Our researchers are based all around the country but under Insight, they work together to conduct research in areas like data science, machine learning and Artificial Intelligence.
Data is created every time an action is captured. We are creating records of our actions at breakneck speed: churning out data in quantities that cannot be adequately expressed in millions, billions or even trillions.
Buried in this avalanche of data is valuable information about health, business, education, consumer behaviour and culture. The role of the data scientist is to mine this enormous resource and find answers to society’s biggest questions.
Artificial Intelligence is an area of computer science that typically seeks to create or develop computer systems that are capable of solving problems that would normally require human intelligence.
Machine learning is a branch of artificial intelligence that seeks to train computers, enabling them to learn from examples or datasets.
Insight’s research combines data science, machine learning and artificial intelligence together; gathering huge amounts of information, making sense of it and using that information to make better and more informed decisions
Insight’s research falls into seven broad categories; Data Science Fundamentals, Sensing and Actuation, Scaling Algorithms, Model Building, Multi Modal Analysis, Data Engineering ad Governance, Decision Making and Trustworthy AI.
Most of Insight’s research works to improve areas like health and human performance, enterprise and services, smart communities and the Internet of Things and sustainability and operations.
