Join us for the second seminar in the Insight SFI Research Centre for Data Analytics Visiting Researchers Programme taking place at Insight DCU. Guest speaker Dr. Jaakko Suutala, Assistant Professor of Artificial Intelligence in Biomimetics & Intelligent Systems Group at the University of Oulu, Finland, who will discuss:
Multi-modal machine learning and deep learning for earth observations and climate change mitigation in sub-Arctic and Arctic regions
Dr Suutala is Assistant Professor of Artificial Intelligence in the Biomimetics and Intelligent Systems Group at the University of Oulu, Finland. He has more than 15 years of experience in machine learning, statistical modelling, and data science in both academia and industry, applied to signal and image processing, data fusion, health informatics, earth sciences, robotics, and wireless communication systems. He has co-founded two start-up companies IndoorAtlas Ltd. and Nelilab Inc., both research-based spin-off companies from University of Oulu. He is currently technical advisor of IndoorAtlas.
Besides his positions at the University of Oulu and industry, he has been a visiting researcher in Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology. In the past Suutala has been working, for example, on Bayesian localization, user identification, and sensor fusion, and more recently on uncertainty quantification and predictive uncertain calibration of ML models, especially concentrated on missing data and small data regimes. From applied AI perspectives his recent interests have been in deep learning and Bayesian methods for earth observations and climate change mitigation. He is a member of IEEE and EurAI. Recently, he has been very active on AI and machine learning community as program committee member of NeurIPS and AISTATS and reviewer for ICML and ICLR (with highlighted review award).
The Insight Visiting Researchers Programme provides an excellent platform for researchers to connect with leading experts in their fielda. The thought provoking presentations aim to enrich the knowledge and perspectives of researchers, fostering collaborations and inspiring innovative approaches in data analytics.
