PhD Scholarships in Computational Semantics for Multimodal Event Processing 

Funding for PhD scholarships (stipend plus fees) is available at the Insight Centre for Data Analytics (www.insight-centre.org) at NUI Galway. 

The Insight Centre for Data Analytics is an SFI funded Research Centre. It brings together researchers from across Ireland to create a critical mass of more than 400 researchers from Ireland’s leading ICT clusters. Researchers at Insight carry out research on a new generation of data analytics technologies in a number of key application domain areas, such as Health and Human Performance, Smart Communities, Internet of Things, Enterprise and Services, Sustainability, and Operations. 

The Internet of Things has moved from a research vision to concrete manifestations in real-world deployments within smart environments. A key challenge is to process the resulting streams of multimodal data in a low-latency manner.  The PhD studentships will explore fundamental research on computational semantics for low-latency event processing of multimodal data streams. They will explore the design space of distributed and/or decentralized event-based middleware architectures for real-time multimedia services and applications. The successful PhD scholarship candidates will carry out distributed systems research at the interface of event processing and artificial intelligence.  

The PhD studentships will explore fundamental research on models and techniques for computational semantics for Multimodal Event Processing. The candidate is expected to ground the work in current state-of-the-art in the middleware, event processing, knowledge graphs, multimodal analytics, computational semantics, and Internet of Things research, and come up with scientifically valid evaluation datasets and frameworks needed for low-latency knowledge-centric multimodal event processing. 

Applicants should have :  

• At least 2.1 grade (or equivalent) in an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in Computer Science or related discipline.  
• Expertise in experimental design is desired but not a requirement.   
• Knowledge of Machine learning and Deep Learning techniques for Computer Vision or Distributional Semantics is a plus. 

• Non-native English speakers require a IELTS(6.5)/TOEFL (88) 

Each student will receive a scholarship including a tax-free stipend of €18,500 per year for four years, full coverage of tuition fees, funds for conference travel, and an equipment allowance. The positions are open for both EU and non-EU candidates. The anticipated start-date is September/October 2022.
