Professor Alan Smeaton spoke to Newstalk’s Jonathan Healy about a wearable sensor that can read and translate the Irish Sign Language (ISL) alphabet in real time. The device, worn on the arm, reads electrical signals in the muscles that are activated when the wearer is spelling words using the ISL alphabet, in a technique known as electromyography.
While the technology is still at an early stage, Smeaton discussed the possibilities and challenges involved in improving and progressing the technology. You can listen to the segment here.
