The Smart Surroundings Showcase at DCU was a great success last Monday. The event, which was held in DCU’s the Helix, kicked off with an address by CEO Prof Noel O’Connor who outlined Insight’s work with industry collaborators.
Next up was Dr Suzanne Little who presented on her multimodal data analysis work, and then Dr Kevin McGuinness spoke about his research – Learning Vision Models with Sparse and Unreliable Labels. Sports analytics is one of Insight’s many strengths and Dr Stephen Behan gave a presentation about the work being done in that field and the challenges therein.
Flourish has been a big success that has grown year on year for Insight. Essentially the project seeks to harness data in order to learn about and enhance student wellbeing and Prof Alan Smeaton gave a presentation about that. Next to speak was Dr Hyowon Lee who explained the L2 Learning platform which supports reflection after telecollaboration sessions by visualising conversation metrics. After that Dr Shirley Coyle, who leads Insight’s Sensors Platform on the potential of wearable technology to harness energy. Dr Mingming Liu was next, giving an overview of data analytics for microservice-based applications. Finally, Dr Alessandra Mileo spoke about the work happening to make AI operate more like the human brain.
The day continued with poster presentations over lunch, and then the delegates were brought on tours of Smart DCU, the Running Lab and the Exo-Skeleton Lab.
