I'm a UCD Electronic Engineering graduate, computer scientist and Fulbright Scholar, with a PhD in Electronic Engineering, currently employed as the team leader for multi-modal human sensing group at the Insight Centre for Data Analytics, at Dublin City University.
I'm currently leading Insight's technical involvement in 4 major projects. two FP7 projects (Fi-Star, Reverie), one H2020 project (Pathway) and a co SFI/Industry funded eHealth project:
(1) the REVERIE project, which focuses on merging virtual and real environments with social networking for use in educational settings,
(2) the FI-STAR project, which is concerned with smart and connected health, within which we are developing home-based rehabilitation systems that use advanced computer gaming technologies.
(3) the PathWay project, which is centred around developing a multidisciplinary ecosystem of support for Cardiovascular Disease management through rehabiliation and behaviioural change.
(4) the industry/SFI funded project has certain IP restrictions on disemination but is focused on merging activity analysis technology with behavouiral change and scoail support on a mobile based platform.
I also run smaller projects that are based around data visualisation, interactive wearables through gamification, Art/Science interactive displays, human motion capture through Vicon/Kinect/wearables etc, and android based applications.
I am truly passionate about science and research and my long-term career goal is to perform cutting edge research that can have a meaningful impact on society. I'm always available for a coffee or a chat about any science related topics :)
Throughout my career, I have researched and published works on various topics including but not limited to; optical cryptography, digital holography for 3D TV application and a variety of 3D reconstruction techniques. I currently research a wide variety of subjects from sports activity analysis to networked virtual environments to human motion reconstruction and E-Health solutions.
I currently have 15 publications in peer-reviewed journals, 8 as senior author, and 43 publications in peer-reviewed conferences, 30 as a senior author. My currently h-index is 12.
I have delivered 2 Invited international conference talks, a University faculty day seminar, 2 PhD seminars, 11 EU project presentations including 4 technical demonstrations for the EU commission as part of various FP7 project reviews. I have presented 30+ poster and technology demonstrations, winning the Best technical demonstration Award of ACM Multimedia for an Interactive 3D Museum exhibition. I have presented my research results at the SFI 10 year celebration of research for Irish Taoiseach (Prime minister), at the Irish Technology Leadership Group’s ‘Silicon Valley comes to Ireland’ event at the Helix in DCU and at Enterprise Ireland’s Big Idea technology showcase in Dublin. I have run many (>40) science demonstrations for various companies and academics, including the Digital Repository of Ireland’s ‘Realising the Opportunities of Digital Humanities’ event held in Ireland’s national sporting stadium, Croke Park.
I have appeared in the IrishTimes newspaper, the Irish Independent newspaper, the Metro newspaper, Business Plus magazine, and on the Irish RTE main evening News twice promoting science and research and also was interviewed on camera for a 10 minute segment for BBC’s 4tech science programme.
